TRAILS to ALES HIKE - 4-mile easy late afternoon hike along the San Elijo Lagoon
About this event
HIKE - San Elijo Lagoon Loop Trail
This is a pretty flat, easy hike around the San Elijo Lagoon between Cardiff and Solana Beach. This almost 4-mile hike is a favorite of birders and has some very nice views. The area is a tidal estuary and is an important breeding area for birds and ocean life.
For those more adventurous, we will briefly explore Annie's Canyon, one of only a few slot canyons in San Diego. Here there is an optional 1/4 mile quite steep clamor up to an overlook above the canyon. We will make a circular route, with the Nature Center in the middle. Bathroom and snack break here. There is no restroom at the trailhead.
Note the 3:45 PM start time as the weather may be warm even this close to the coast. Bring plenty of fluids, good hiking shoes and poles not really necessary unless you are climbing to the top of Annie's Canyon.
The trailhead is located at the north end of Rios Road in Solana Beach. (GPS Location 152 Solana Point Circle) Exit I - 5 at Lomas Santa Fe and go west about 2 miles and turn right on Rios Road and follow it north for 1 mile to the end of the road. On street parking.
Plan on joining the group for refreshments afterwards at Chief's Burgers & Brews located at 124 Lomas Santa Fe at the corner with Rios.
