About this event
HIKE - VOLCAN MOUNTAIN
A wonderful 5.5 - mile more difficult out and back winter mountain hike for spectacular views. Volcan Mountain outside Julian is the source of the water for the San Diego River and the San Dieguito River Basins. The mountain was also the site of the first San Diego Gold Rush in 1870. We will hike above the apple orchards on the 5-Oaks Trail (there are now 7 species of oak trees) and then on a nice road up to the summit. There is 1200- foot elevation gain but with switchbacks and an easy pace the climb is quite doable. The view from the top is simply amazing as you see features in 5 counties, two states, two countries, two bodies of water, two tectonic plates and have an aerial view of 7 different habitats. We will hike down on the road.
Dress in layers, wear good hiking boots, poles recommended, plenty of fluids and a snack. Be ready for winter weather. Carpools will be arranged.
Come up to Julian early to visit the town, buy an apple pie of stop at Dudley's Bakery
