HIKE BLACK MOUNTAIN NIGHTHAWK TRAIL

Black Mountain is a relatively small yet scenic peak in the Rancho Penasquitos area. It is made up of a series of chaparral and sage covered hills, ridges, and canyons. The park is currently 2,352 acres. There are several possible routes up Black Mountain. For this trip, we begIn at Hilltop Community Park and climb the loop on the southern slope of the mountain along the Nighthawk trail to the summit. The trailhead is on the eastern side of the park.

Rated: challenging ascent
There is at least a 300 foot elevation change, the trail in some places is rocky with a couple of fairly steep inclines/declines. Need poles! The chaparral is now high enough to offer some shade along the trail.
There are additional options to extend the hike if folks are interested.

Directions:
From I-15, take 56 West to the Black Mountain Road exit. Go north on Black Mountain Road for approximately 1 mile and turn right on Oviedo Street. Continue on Oviedo Street for approximately .2 miles, then turn right onto Oviedo Way. Follow Oviedo Way to the end (.6 miles) to Hilltop Community Park. 9711 Oviedo Way, San Diego, CA 92129
